Can you sell AI-written books on Amazon? KDP's 2026 rules and pay

Yes, if you tell Amazon what AI generated. KDP pays 70% on ebooks from $2.99 to $12.99 since July 7, 2026. What a sale nets, and what courses leave out.

Yes, with one condition. Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing takes books written with AI, but if an AI tool generated the text, the images or a translation, you have to say so when you publish. Using AI to edit or check writing that's yours needs no disclosure. KDP pays 70% on an ebook priced from $2.99 to $12.99 on Amazon.com, a band it widened from $9.99 on July 7, 2026, and 35% outside it. Kindle Unlimited pays from a monthly fund instead, $69.3 million across every enrolled author in September 2026. What none of that tells you is how many copies a book sells, and Amazon doesn't publish that.

What Amazon counts as AI-generated

KDP's content guidelines draw the line in two sentences. "We define AI-generated content as text, images, or translations created by an AI-based tool." And: "If you created the content yourself, and used AI-based tools to edit, refine, error-check, or otherwise improve that content (whether text or images), then it is considered 'AI-assisted' and not 'AI-generated.'" You must tell KDP about AI-generated content when you publish or republish a book; "you are not required to disclose AI-assisted content" (KDP, content guidelines).

The same page keeps the right to act afterwards: "We reserve the right to remove content from sale if we determine it creates a poor customer experience." A disclosure lets a book in; it doesn't keep it on sale.

The limits on volume

In September 2023 Amazon capped new titles at three a day per account, after a wave of suspected AI-written books, and said it could change the number if needed (Authors Guild, September 2023). Three a day is still more than any one person writes. What the cap stops is the account that publishes thirty.

What one sale pays

For an ebook, the 70% option pays "70% of your list price without VAT, less delivery costs," and delivery costs average "$0.06 per unit sold" and rise with file size (KDP, eBook royalty options). On Amazon.com the 70% band runs from $2.99 to $12.99 since July 7, 2026 (KDP, list price requirements). Below or above it, the rate is 35%.

List priceAt 35%At 70%, less average delivery
$0.99$0.35not available
$2.99$1.05$2.03
$4.99$1.75$3.43
$9.99$3.50$6.93
$12.99$4.55$9.03
$14.99$5.25not available

Our arithmetic on KDP's rates. The last two rows are the ones to read twice: a book priced at $14.99 earns $3.78 less per copy than the same book at $12.99, because it falls out of the band.

A paperback pays 60% of the list price minus the cost of printing it, and 50% under $9.98 on Amazon.com. KDP's own example: "(0.60 x $15) - $5.00 = $4.00" (KDP, paperback royalty).

Kindle Unlimited

Enrolling a book in KDP Select puts it in Kindle Unlimited, and the price of entry is exclusivity: "you're committing to make the digital format of that book available exclusively through KDP," in 90-day terms. You earn a share of a monthly fund by the pages readers turn, and KDP Select paid authors $69.3 million in September 2026 (KDP Select). That's one sum split across every enrolled book. KDP's pages don't promise a rate per page.

What $500 a month takes

At the rates above, $500 a month means about 146 copies a month of a $4.99 ebook, 72 of a $9.99 one, or more than 1,400 at $0.99. Amazon doesn't publish sales by title, so there's no public count of how many AI-written books reach those numbers.

Our reading: a course that sells "AI books" as passive income is selling the cheap part. Writing a manuscript now costs an afternoon. Getting a reader to find it, among the other books published the same day, is the work, and it's the part AI doesn't do for you. We ran the same numbers for side hustles in general in the median side hustle piece, and for another AI marketplace in what prompt sellers keep.

Taxes

Royalties of $10 or more in a year come with a Form 1099-MISC (IRS, Instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC, revised December 2026). "If you are in business as a self-employed writer, inventor, artist, etc., report your royalty income and expenses on Schedule C, not on Schedule E" (IRS, Instructions for Schedule E, 2025). On Schedule C they owe self-employment tax like any freelance income, which we set out in what freelancers owe the IRS in 2026.
