Cursor's $30 plan bills Claude extra. The switch can't be undone.
Cursor's new $30 Premium plan includes Grok, not Claude. Every Claude token bills at API list price, and the switch from the $20 legacy Pro is permanent.

By the numbers
If you code in Cursor with Claude, the new X Subscription costs you more than the plan you have. Premium is $30 a month, against $20 for legacy Cursor Pro, and it includes no Claude at all: on the new plans, Claude and GPT are "billed at API list prices from the first use and paid from your prepaid credit". The legacy plans still carry a monthly pool for third-party models.
The switch is optional, and it's one-way. Cursor's help page says it plainly: "The switch is permanent. It can't be undone, and Support can't undo it for you." Nothing in Cursor's documentation sets a date by which you have to move.
So the decision is simple to state. Switch if you'd pay for Grok and X Premium+ anyway, or if you already code mostly with Grok. If Claude is your model, the legacy plan is worth keeping, and the promotional offer in your billing settings shouldn't change that.
What The X Subscription is
xAI announced The X Subscription on October 12, 2026. It folds Grok, the Grok Bot agents, Cursor and X Premium into one plan with five tiers: Free, Plus at $8, Premium at $30, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200 a month. Cursor now sells the same tiers on its own pricing page.
Every paid tier draws on one usage pool for Grok models, shared between the Grok app and Cursor and refreshed weekly. Premium gets 4x the Plus pool, Super 15x and Ultra 50x. xAI says each plan includes "at least twice as much coding usage with our models as the comparable Cursor plan."
That promise covers Grok and Cursor's own models. Claude, GPT and every other third-party model sit outside it. Cursor's pricing page says that usage "is not included in the monthly prices shown and must be purchased separately," on Premium and above, from prepaid credit or an auto top-up.
The legacy plan you'd give up
Cursor's legacy plan page maps each old plan to its replacement:
| Legacy plan | Price | Replaced by | New price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20/mo | Premium | $30/mo |
| Pro+ | $60/mo | Super | $100/mo |
| Ultra | $200/mo | Ultra | $200/mo |
| Teams Standard | $40/user/mo | Teams, Premium seat | $30/user/mo |
The legacy plans split included usage into two monthly pools, one for Cursor's models and one for "Other Models," the third-party ones. That second pool is what disappears when you switch.
Cursor's current docs don't print the pool's size in dollars. Third-party guides, such as this one, put legacy Pro's at $20 of third-party usage a month. Treat that figure as unconfirmed by Cursor. Your own usage dashboard shows what you draw from it, and that number is the one to check before you press Unify.
What Claude costs you after the switch
After the switch, Claude in Cursor bills at Anthropic's API list prices, checked on October 23, 2026:
| Model | Input, per million tokens | Output, per million tokens | Cache hits, per million |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2 | $10 | $0.10 |
| Claude Opus 5.5 | $4 | $20 | $0.20 |
Agent work is input-heavy, because every step re-reads the files and the conversation. Here's an illustration, our arithmetic on those list prices: a day of agent sessions that reads 3 million tokens without a cache hit and writes 150,000 costs $7.50 on Sonnet 5.5 and $15 on Opus 5.5. Over 20 working days that's $150 and $300 a month, on top of the $30 plan. Cached input brings it down a lot: at Opus 5.5's 20 cents per million cache hits, the same 3 million tokens served from cache cost 60 cents instead of $12.
Your own numbers will differ, and that's the point. On the new plan, every one of those tokens is a line on your bill from the first request. On legacy Pro, the first slice of it sits inside the $20.
Teams pay one more charge. On Teams and Enterprise, Cursor adds a "Cursor Token Rate of $0.25 per million tokens" on eligible third-party models, above the provider's price. A team seat gets $10 cheaper, from $40 to $30, and every Claude token gets dearer.
Where the $90 comes from
xAI's headline is that Premium bundles "SuperGrok + Cursor Pro + X Premium+" for $30, "previously $90 combined". Take out the $20 that was Cursor Pro, and $70 of that value is Grok and X.
If you already pay for SuperGrok or X Premium+, Premium is a real saving: one $30 bill replaces two or three. If you don't, the bundle charges you $10 more a month for things you didn't buy, and moves your Claude usage to metered billing at the same time.
The plan is built around xAI's models, which is fair enough for a company selling its own product. Grok usage comes with the plan, and third-party usage passes through at the provider's list price. What it isn't built for is the developer who chose Cursor as an editor and Claude as the model. We've seen this shape before in how AI tools moved from flat seats to meters: the subscription price holds or falls, and the usage you cared about moves outside it.
Before you press Unify
The switch is permanent, so the checks come first:
- Read your Other Models usage in Cursor's usage dashboard for the last two or three months. That's the spend that moves to your card.
- Set a monthly limit on additional usage before you switch, if you do. Cursor's docs say the cap applies regardless of how much credit you hold.
- Check where you pay for Cursor. If it's through Apple's App Store, xAI's unification guide says Cursor can't cancel or refund it: you cancel and ask Apple yourself.
- Export what you need. Our piece on what happens when your AI tool gets acquired covers what to keep a copy of when the owner changes the terms.
What would change this read: Cursor publishing an end date for legacy plans, or putting a third-party allowance back into Premium. Neither is in its documentation as of October 23, 2026. Until one of them is, a Claude-first developer gives up an included pool and a lower price for a bundle built around another model, and can't come back.
